MAUES - Land of the Guarana and Satere Mawe Indians  just  267 km from MANAUS

Most indians are living in Brasil in indigenouos reserves, the largest ones are in Roraima near the border to Venezuela, around Sao Gabriel de Cachoeira and around Maues, 267 km from Manaus.

Known as the sons of the Guarana the Satere Mawe (=Maues) indians are still maintaining their traditional way of planting and using the Guarana, for example as medical drug or for their ritual drink SAPKO. The name SATERE means BEARDED FIREWORM and the name MAWE (= Maues) INTELLIGENT TALKING PERROT.

Most of the approx. 8.000 tribe members live along the Andira, Marau and Abaxaxis rivers in the triangle Maues - Barreirinha - Parintins and Itaituba (Para state). They live mainly from Guarana and Manioc plantations. Each village as a TUXAUA responsible for the local politics of the tribe.

In ancient times before the contact with the whites, the Satere-Mawe lived in the large area between the Madiera, Tapajos and Amazonas river. The indians see their origin in a place called Nocoquem, located with its mythic heroes at the Tapajos river, an area with intensive jungle and many rocks, and were where the rocks are talking. The first contact with the whites was in 1669 with the Jesuitos, which founded their Tupinambaranas mission. Tupi is the langugage group of the indigenous including the Satere-Mawe, Parintintims (Parintins), Muduruku and Mura tribes. The Satere Mawe are forst indians, building their villages next to the springs of the rivers. Today they are concentrated around me Marau, Miriti, Urupadi, Manjuru and Andira rivers. These areas offer hunting facilities and land for guarana plantations and natural palms such as Acai, Tucuma and Pupunha.
